Brandy: Very popular in South Africa, this distilled spirit is made from grapes and can be enjoyed neat or with a mixer like cola.

Top brands to look out for: Richelieu, Fish Eagle, Klipdrift

Cognac: Similar to brandy, however to be called ‘cognac’, this spirit must be produced in the Cognac region in France and must be aged for a minimum of 2 years.

Top brand to look out for: Bisquit, Courvoisier, Hennessy

Whiskey: This distilled spirit is typically made from grains, including barley, rye or wheat. Often enjoyed neat or on ice, it is also the base of classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned or Whisky Sours.

Gin: Made from juniper berries, this white spirit is becoming increasingly popular, with many craft distilleries appearing across South Africa. Enjoy it in a classic G&T or in classic cocktails like a Negroni.

Vodka: This versatile white spirit is usually made from grains or potatoes and forms the base of many classic cocktails like the Martini or Cosmopolitan. Also popular mixed with tonic or soda.
